can get given the circumstances. >> our speaker has said when the senate acts, we will have a vote in the house. that is what he said. that is what we expect. that is what the american people deserve. >> some republicans say they are leaning towards amending the bill and sending it back to the senate but most senators have already gone home now. the new congress is sworn in on thursday. so p the bill does not pass before then, the entire process starts over from scratch. we will have a live report with the latest on the hill in just a few minutes. it is a test of faith for the members of a prince george's county church. a pyre broke out this morning and badly damaged their house of worship. news4's prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins is in oxon hill with the story. >> reporter: good evening. they were just here celebrating new year's eve at mid might last night. then they wake up this morning to find this is what is left of their church. they are working to shore up the

building. the prince george's county fire investigators are trying to figure out exactly what caused this fire. >> can't believe it. first of the year. >> reporter: when the members of the church of oxon hill saw what was left of their building, all they could do was pray. >> there was no electricity. we left, locked up, and went home. when they called me, 7:30 this morning, they say the church is on fire. >> reporter: the small church of 80 or so members was built in 1963. and has been a church home for generations of family. >> my children have grown up in the church. and -- just that. >> we learned that the power not only here to the church but the entire neighborhood went out last night shortly after their services. >> reporter: fire investigators looking into the possibility that the power outage may have somehow ignited the fire. once electricity came back on in the church. >> very real possibility that

when the power was re-energized something could have happened. something could have been left on. something could have had a power surge. >> reporter: atf is working with the prince george's county fire department to rule out the possibility of arson or some kind of hate crime. that's routine when a fire involves a house of worship. >> atf is automatically called in to help investigate a potential crime or the possible cause of this fire which could be very accidental. >> 22 years i have been pastor of the church here. >> reporter: the fire will mean a new beginning for the church family but may not be easy. the good news is that with no injuries and no one inside when the fire happened, they will all be starting over together. >> i was reminded by the members of the church community when i was speaking with them that this is nothing more than bricks and mortar and wood. that the church is the congregation themselves. >> reporter: fire investigators and the atf will be back out here tomorrow morning to continue their investigation. they still don't have a cause for this fire just yet.

but they are leaning closer to the possibility of ruling out that this was a crime. it is looking like this is most likely accidental but again, that investigation will continue. looking at more than $100,000 in damage to this church. coming up on "news4 at 6:00," we are going to show you pictures of just how amazing that fire was this morning. when firefighters arrived showing lou the roof of this church. reporting live in oxon hill, tracee wilkins, news4. >> we are starting off the new year on a gray and chilly note out there. >> never cleared out all day. meteorologist doug kammerer is here with a look at your first partly cloudy on this first day of the year. >> happy new year. i think we are going to stay with those clouds through the rest of the night and part of the day tomorrow. difference is going to be those temperatures. out there right now sitting at 44 degrees, win out of the north at 5 miles an hour. 44 actually a little bit above average for this time of year. we head into the first of the new year. and temperatures around the region, though, look to the north. 36 at hagerstown and 39 in

martinsburg. frederick, 39, gaithersburg. to the south, fredericksburg, 45 degrees. now what have we seen? seen the clouds all day long. moisture has stayed just down to the south. i expect that's where it should stay the rest of the night tonight. something else will be moving in during the day tomorrow. talk much more about that, plus what about our chances for snow? i will talk about that, too, in my forecast. >> doug, thank you. returning now to the latest developments in the fiscal cliff negotiations. republican members of the house will meet for a second time today in just about ten minutes. at 5:15, to talk about how they want to move this bill that came from the senate forward. jennifer johnson joins us now from capitol hill. jennifer, republicans have strong feelings about this senate measure. what are the chances we are going to see an up or down vote on this? >> reporter: i would say an up and down vote on the bill the senate passed at 2:00 this morning, very unlikely. the house may take a vote on an amended bill. the senate has just sent word if an amended bill is sent to the

senate, the senate will not act on it and this entire fiscal crisis will be passed on to the new congress which comes to work on thursday. >> is that because the -- senate -- for the most part has already left? >> well, senate leaders remain in session and they already decided if there was going to be a vote on the bill that they sent to the house they could do it without a roll call and do it and pass it on to the president. but the house, obviously is not taking a vote all day. they are making it clear her very unhappy with this bill. not enough deficit reduction on the spending cuts in this bill. they don't like the bill. they are now saying they may take a vote on an amended bill and as i said the senate saying they are not going to take that up. >> we saw vice president biden instrumental in getting this deal done on the senate side. met with the democratic caucus on the house side this morning. can he move republicans? >> it doesn't appear so. not on the house. he met with p nancy pelosi and

other democrats today. but it does not appear that the republicans in the house are going to send the bill back to the senate and doesn't appear had a vice president biden is making my headway with those gop republicans. >> all right. jennifer johnson, live on capitol hill with the latest. jennifer, thank you. could be a long night. certainly a long week already. stay with news4 for the up-to-the minute on the information on the fiscal cliff. we will be monitoring lawmakers on the hill and have an update in the next half hour. of course, you can always get details on nbcwashington.com. breaking news right now. related to the child sex abuse scandal involving former penn state football coach jerry sandusky. the governor of pennsylvania says he plans to sue the ncaa over sanctions it imposed against the team. the university agreed to the sanction last july. they included $60 million fine, that would be used nationally to finance child abuse prevention efforts. governor corbett objects to money being spent outside of

pennsylvania. he scheduled to hold a news conference after filing the lawsuit tomorrow. she is in good spirits and making excellent progress. that's what doctors have to say about secretary of state hillary rodham clinton as she gets treated for a blood clot in her head. it was found this weekend during an exam to check her recovery from a concussion she suffered after a fall at her home last month. doctors say that they are not sure whether the clot is related to the concussion. she is being treated with blood thinners. students who survived the massacre at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut, go back to class this week. the elementary school students will use a vacant school building in the nearby town of monroe. an open house for parents will be held tomorrow and students will return to class on thursday. sandy hook elementary school became a crime scene on december 14 when adam lanza killed 26 people and himself. it is not clear whether the school will ever reopen. d.c. police tonight are

still trying to pig out what caused a pretty big pileup today on new york avenue. seven cars crashed early this morning near the intersection of bladensburg road northeast. 18 people were injured but they are all expected to be okay. tonight prince william county police officers admit her struggling to cope with the loss of one of their own. motorcycle officer chris young died yesterday in a crash responding to a call. he had strong family connections to the force. along with his seven years of service. news4's david culver is live in bristow with a look the the growing memorial in his honor. >> reporter: when we were out here 24 hours ago, jim, the street behind me was a illuminated with emergency vehicles. tonight, traffic is moving smoothly and lot of folks would say back to normal. that is until you look at the side of the road. that's when you will notice a memorial set up will. it is a reminder of the life lost.

a cross and flowers mark the side of yesterday's fiery crash. officer chris yung had his motorcycle lights and siren on. he was headed to another accident when his cruiser slammed into this van. the driver of the sxran her passenger walked away from the crash unharmed. across the county fellow officers are remembering. the shrouded cruiser and motorcycle sit outside the garfield district station in woodbridge. >> these are memorials that the public can come and leave flowers if they like and cards if they would like. it is a way of showing we are mourning. >> reporter: he knew officer yung well. >> one of the best guys on the department. he always had a smile. and always had a very optimistic point of view on everything. >> reporter: it has been more than 20 years since prince william county lost an officer in the line of duty. they are finding it hard to cope. >> a very, very emotional day to say the least. and -- you know, we are struggling.

>> reporter: officer yung's family is deeply connected to the department. his wife is a former officer. and his brother and sister-in-law are still on the force. tonight in this shopping center, the super target shopping center on nokesville road, there will be a candlelight vigil at 7:30 to remember the life of officer yung. come and bring your own candles. ahead at 6:00, we will have more on the coverage of officer young's death, including how folks from across the nation are showing is port to the prince william county police department and the role social media is playing. at the stroke of midnight some gay and lesbian couples in maryland became officially newlyweds. the same-sex marriage law took effect at 12:01 this morning. some celebrated with midnight wedding ceremonies. a voter referendum in move made maryland one of nine states to legalize same-sex marriage. there are exemptions for religious organizations that

choose not to marry gay couples. wedding was the highlighted of today's tournament of roses parade. >> by the powers vested in me by the state of california, i now pronounce you husband and wife. >> couple tied the knot on the float live in front of the parade-goers and millions watching at home on tv. the parade also featured marching bands from dozens of high schools from across the country. new this year a float from the department of defense to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the korean war. it was decorated with morehan 240,000 dollars worth of flowers and several korean war vets also rode on that float. another catching moment is when a father returning from the war zone surprised his family along the parade route. >> powerful parade today. when we come right back on "news4 at 5:00," more violence

kick it up a notch tonight. stay packed tonight many gyms are packed with people trying to make good on a popular new years's resolution to lose weight. we found an old exercise with a new twist. it is a spin class on the treadmill called the treadmill training class that people say is the hardest thing they have everdone. we checked it out and asked them. >> you can do it, guys. i need a faster pace. >> treadmill train sing a 45-minute workout done on the treadmill. heart rate comes up. a lot of interval work and we work at all levels. some walkers, runners, hybrid half runner and half walkers. we do a lot of sprint work. hill work. lateral training. anything we can do on the treadmill. mice and easy. condition people who don't want to necessarily run wrought side and might have knee issues,

joint issues. and they really want to get in that different type of cardio conditioning. >> i'm a runner but gotten out of shape. for me, i ran a lot more distance and run faster than i normally run. >> 30 laterals on each. third and final set. 30 seconds. you immediate more speed, add it in. >> i might have someone that has never even walked or run five minutes of their entire life to someone that does triathlons and i can challenge each person on each different treadmill at a different level. >> it is not easy. by any means. you know, everybody has to start somewhere. >> our job as coaches is challenge the person by using a heart rate, challenge the heart rate. >> this is the -- what exercise is all about. faster, harder. >> you got it. come on. >> extremely challenging. i would never work out that hard on my own. i just finished a workout with her and i ran five miles on the

treadmill in one spot. i have never done that before. >> lifetime athletics treadmill training classes offered year round. the goal is to have the whole class ready to run a 5-k race. after watching that i feel like i would be ready to climb a mountain. >> i-didn't see one person fall. would-be flipping all over myself. clinging to the bar. >> i would be on incline zero. >> exactly where you immediate to be. cold weather tomorrow. we are going to want to stay in when we run tomorrow. >> very cold day tomorrow. you know what another really good workout is? one of the best all-time workouts ever happens to be this workout right here. take a look at this. lot of people out there on the not mack today doing rogue. rogue along the potomac. these guys get out will. lot of the colleges get out there and even during the winter months. even when the temperatures are below freezing. as long as that river is nice and calm they get out there. i will tell you that. temperatures sitting at 44 degrees at the airport.

you see they are bundled up. windchill at 42. not much. average high is 42. we are above that during the afternoon today. temperatures right now at 43 degrees. leesburg, 49. martinsburg, 37 in winchester. colder air is up to the north and west. warmer air as normal down to the south. 45 degrees in fredericksburg. 43 towards pax river. watch what happens. trying to make its way our way. now we did see some of this come over earlier today. we saw a sprinkle or two. that was about it. the atmosphere very, very dry. and bottom half of the atmosphere. anything that was falling wasn't making it to the ground. i think that will be the case with this little blach of moisture here. this batch of moisture trying to make it farther to the north. i don't expect much with this. i think we will be dry throughout the rest of the evening hours. lot of you are waiting important snow. hey, we are already through december. is the winter over already? don't think that just yet. month of december this year, we

only had .2 of an inch officially at the airport. 82% of our snow falls between january and march. so there's still a very good chance we are going to see snow here coming up in the next couple of months. i think it will be the latter half of january because the first part of january looks a little bit on the cool side to start off. then i think we get milder over the next week or so. cold front moves through overnight mitt and tomorrow. it is just breezy and cold. high temperatures tomorrow could be the coldest they have been so far. highs in the 30s. many of you will are struggle to be around the freezing mark tomorrow. rather breezy conditions, wind chills in the 20s all day long. thursday call it chilly. not cold as temperatures get back to the 40-degree mark in the city. i think we will have sunshine. more clouds continue cool this evening. temperatures 32 to 42. nice and calm. tomorr morning waking up to chilly numbers. 22 in the suburbs to 30 in the city. mostly cloudy skies. winds out of the north at 5 to 10. tomorrow's winds will be breezy. 10 to 20 miles per hour.

>> if you are a redskins fan you couldn't start off the new year in a better way. couldn't be happier. getting ready for a playoff game. that's what the nfl is all about. it has been a roller coaster ride important the redskins this season. it has been pun important the skins and their fans. cap off on the first playoff appearance in five years. their first home playoff game since 1999. kickoff a new year, a look back at how the skins captured the nfc east craft. started opening weekend of the season. redskins showed the saints along with everyone else around the nfl, they were a team to watch out important. 40 points, skins put up their afternoon. rg3 threw for over 300 yards. 20 to be exact to go along with two touchdowns. week four, the skins got back to their winning ways. after two straight losses. this fumble recovery in the end zone by receiver garcon was the

first of three touchdowns on the day for the skins. they would go on to edge out the buccaneers. fans at fedexfield were in for a treat in week six. rg3 would be okay after suffering a concussion the previous week. those questions were answered right away. griffin has the longest touchdown run by an nfl quarterback in 16 years. after the team's bye week, the skins came back to the field refocused. rg3 was named the captain of the team by his peers in a must-win ga game. later on, a thanksgiving day feast important the redskins and their fans. 28-point second-quarter explosion by the skins blew the doors off of the cowboys in

honoring a fallen officer. motorcycle officer chris yung died yesterday while responding to a call. a vigil will be held at 7:30 tonight and there is now a motorcycle and cruiser in black at the eastern district station so people can leave flowers and cards in his memory. a power surge may be to blame for a pyre that seriously damaged a church in prince george's county. the blaze broke out at the church this morning. investigators are looking into were the blaze was caused when power was restored after an outage. let's fast forward to the weather. >> talking about cool temperatures today. not all had a bad. even though we saw cloud cover. temperatures were at or little bit above average. windchill little bit of a factor. take a look to the north. 33. martinsburg at 32. panhandle of west virginia, 43. leesburg. 42 in through the washington, d.c., metro area. we are a little bit on the cool side. take a look at what's happening included coverwise. lot of clouds moving in. clouds don't have a lot of moisture associated with it. could see a sprinkle or flurry.

it is possible. i will show you what to expect as we move through the next couple of day as we move into 2013. things changing a little bit from where we ended 2012. tonight police are investigating a new years's eve stabbing on a metro bus. it happened early this morning in anacostia. >> it is just the latest attack on a metro bus in recent months. derrick ward is live in southeast where some people are calling for more security on metro. >> they are. the 93 bus runs between adams mill road and northwest. congress heights back in southeast and, you know, along the way, popular might spots, u street corridor, barracks road. just to name a few. it was a popular route last night. when the bus got here in the 2200 block of martin king, a vicious attack occurred that left would women hospitalized. i was around 2:15 a.m. on the 93 bus headed to congress heights. according to metro, two women onboard that bus got into an

argument with a male passenger. as the bus traveled south on martin luther king avenue, things got violent. male passenger stabbed one of the females several times in the chest, arms, legs. the woman she had been riding with was beaten in the head and face. possibly with some kind of object. authorities say that one of the victims alerted the driver who stopped the bus and alerted police. the attacker ran and remains at large. it was back on december 9 when a woman with a baby was shot and killed as she tried to board a metro bus on minnesota avenue. the baby was wounded as was the bus driver. these two violent crimes have those that ride metro bus calling for more protection. especially on routes that run into the wee hours of the morning. when passengers and drivers can

be vulnerable and drivers can't operate the bus and do security, t t t too. metro has stepped up its bus security. video cameras are onboard many buses. that's where police began their investigation. looking at onboard camera video. but riders say a might where people are encouraged to take metro instead of driving to be safe. measures are used to see the riders are indeed as safe as they can be. >> new years's eve, they should have had more security on the bus. >> reporter: authorities are asking anyone with information on this attack to contact them in the meantime they are indeed studying those videos from the bus and we are told they may have a suspect description very soon. the women remain hospitalized and names have not been released. live in southeast. back to you. >> a crash scene stretched into a yard in southeast d.c. and the accident sent two people to the hospital. it happened this morning here in the district on mississippi avenue. several cars slammed into each

other. none of the injuries is life threatening. the cause of the accident remains under investigation. nearly 400 people used a free cab service to get home after partying on new years's eve. the washington regional alcohol program provided those rides through their sober ride program last night. the group's president says a would-be drunk driver was taken off the area roadways every 74 seconds. nearly 2,000 people used the program this holiday season. the new year brought a bundle of joy to one family. pat lawson muse is here with the special way they rang in the new year. >> a washington area couple are the proud parents of the district's first newborn of 2013 born shortly after the stroke of midnight. 23ier old ferman dough mendoza is one proud papa. he has plenty to be proud of. >> i got teary-eyed. i started crying. >> reporter: five seconds after

midnight, mendoza and 24-year-old elvira welcomed little emily ameet a mendoza into the world. >> it was beautiful thing. something that you don't forget. >> reporter: at 6 pounds, 10.8 ounces, 19 inches,ing the district's first baby of the new year. a bit of a surprise for her parents who weren't expecting her million after january 4. however, at 10:30 last night, elvira went into labor and quickly realized little emily wasn't going to wait. >> she is starting to get pains. she wanted an epidural but it was too late because she was at least seven centimeters. >> reporter: the labor and delivery unit is the busiest unit in the city. delivering an average 4500 little bundles of joy every year. >> business is booming. >> reporter: today nurses in the hospital delivery and postpartum units were abuzz about this bundle. >> oh, my gosh. we got the first baby. we never get the first baby. >> reporter: true, it doesn't

revelations about mars but it was just a simple happy new year greeting. to all of us back here on the third rock from the sun. all right. looking to save money in the new year. there are at least four things expected to cost less, less, in 2013. according to "the wall street journal," the price of used cars is expected to drop. that's because more used cars are coming to the market and should drop prices. cable and satellite tv may not be dropping but more people are ditching paid tv. subscriptions for free. the price of flat screen tvs are expected to go down, too. my timing was off on that. fewer people are buying tv superdelegates and competition has increased. the cost of those e-books should soften. retailers are expected to get more flexibility to set prices. 50 years ago today, president lincoln sign ad document that changed the course of the u.s. history.

for the past three days, estimated 10,000 people lined up at the national archives to see the emancipation proclamation for themselves. the document is rarely on display because of its fragile condition. president lincoln issued the proclamation as the nation entered the third year of the civil war. the document freed all persons helding in slaves in states rebelling against the union and historians consider the proclamation a stepping stone to ratification of the 13th amendment which abolished slavery. the exhibit ended at 5:00 today. also in honor of today's anniversary the u.s. post office unveiled an emancipation proclamation stamp at the national archives. the new forever stamp features the praise henceforward shall be pre. it shows the year the paper was signed. stamp goes on sale to. the first in the series of three civil rights stamps. the post office plans to release this year. >> when we come right back on "news4 at 5:00" tonight, a tour

pow. keep in mind a 6-year-old is presumed not to be able to form the intent to commit a crime. >> reporter: they informed the parents the 6-year-old should not return to school. the school system does not comment on individual student disciplinary matters. but spokesman dana told news4 that generally in an incident involving the behavior of our younger students, we will make sure that the student and his family are well-informed of any behavior that needs on change and understand the consequences if the behavior does not change. thicker has spoken to a young client that told him -- >> we were playing and he certainly didn't say i was trying to shoot someone. i was trying to hurt someone. >> reporter: according to school system policy, the suspension ruling can be appealed within ten days. >> the boy's parents are scheduled to meet with school administrators tomorrow. we will keep you posted on that.

also 45 degrees on sunday. the redskins taking on the seahawks. looks good for game time. i think we will be aok with game time temperature around 42 to 43 degrees. look at this. mild trend. 46 on monday. 50 on tuesday. and i don't think that's as warm as we will get. we could continue to go up first part of the week and our first part of the new year looking on the cool side. but the middle part of january, looking a little bit warm but snow lovers, don't give up just yet. 82% of the snow falls between january and march. we have a lot of time left. taking a bike ride is a good way to keep that fitness resolution in 2013. plenty of people were out doing just that on the trails of haines point in southwest today. this spot in the district is a favorite among cyclists for its flat straightaways and nice views of the potomac. not a bad way to kick off the new year. and, you know, it could have been worse. when that wind whips off the potomac you don't want to be on a bike.
